Biography
Mat’s love of music was sparked by school lessons in the early 2000s. His principal instrument is the saxophone, but over time he has become a skilled multi-instrumentalist, also performing on flute, clarinet, bassoon, and piano.
In 2010, Mat began a Music degree at the University of Hull, where he specialised in solo and ensemble performance, as well as conducting. During his studies, he honed his skills under the guidance of inspirational tutors including Iain Harrison and Carolyn Beedle (saxophone), Ian Denley (bassoon), Kate Hart (clarinet), and Jo Peach (piano).
Since graduating, Mat has worked as a woodwind teacher in and around Nottingham while developing a broad portfolio of performing and conducting experience with various ensembles across the region. He continues to study piano with local teacher Antony Clare and regularly engages in professional development through a range of courses and CPD sessions.
In 2018, Mat was appointed director of the Torkard Academy Project in Hucknall—a creative hub offering accessible and affordable music opportunities for young people in the area. Under his leadership, the project has grew significantly.
Mat is passionate about making music accessible to both performers and audiences, and about providing inspiring experiences for young musicians. This passion led to the formation of The Mat Davis Orchestra, the only amateur film music orchestra in the East Midlands. The ensemble offers a unique concert experience for local audiences, combining the excitement of cinematic music with opportunities for developing players to perform in a professional-style setting.
He is a member of the Independent Society of Musicians.
